Within five days, two detainees escaped from John Vorster Square, Johannesburg. On 7.4.77 Mr Pascall Moloi (25), a Johannesburg bank teller held under the Terrorism Act, was the first to escape. He is alleged to have sawn through the window bars of his cell with a hacksaw, then tied a rope to the bars and climbed down two floors to the courtyard. Mr Patric Mabinda's escape on 11.4.77 was remarkably similar, though he is alleged to have tied together a pair of trousers and a blanket to climb down to the courtyard. Neither was discovered missing until the following morning.
Police are still searching for the two men.
