Police arrested and charged 32 people with taking part in an unlawful procession following a march through Soweto on 27 March at the end of "Heroes' Week". A further five were charged with public violence.
"Heroes' Week" from 21-27 March was called by the Black People's Convention (BPC) to commemorate those who have died through political violence in South Africa and Namibia, including those at Sharpeville, those in political detention and those killed last year in the disturbances. Other organisations supporting the call were the Christian Institute, SASO, the Union of Black Journalists and SWAPO. A Sharpeville 17th anniversary meeting was held in Soweto on 20 March, addressed by Dr Manas Buthelezi.
