The first case of its kind under the Smith regime's Indemnity and Compensation Act was heard in camera before the Salisbury High Court in February. A claim for damages for assault by Rhodesian security forces, brought by Mr. Anthony Dzvinamurungu, had been allowed by the Minister of Justice, Law and Order to proceed through the courts. In all previous cases, such claims have been halted by the Minister under the terms of the Act. The Indemnity and Compensation Act came into force in October 1975 but is retrospective to 1 December 1972. In Mr. Dzvinamurungu's case, the local press were forbidden to report any details.
