Police opened fire on a crowd of 5,000 school students in Soweto protesting against large rent increases on 27 April. At least three youths were injured. Tear gas was also used several times in order to disperse the crowd. A planned protest meeting in a Soweto stadium had been banned by the magistrate, and the protesters took to the streets, marching towards the offices of the Urban Bantu Council where stones were thrown at windows through which photographs were being taken of the crowd.
