TRANSKEI R400 Between 1 January and 16 October 1976 thirty people were detained under Proclamation R400 in the Transkei. Of these 25 were still held on 26 October, the date of Transkeian 'independence'. Since then, the SA government has refused to answer questions relating to Transkei 'internal' matters. Proclamation R400 has been repealed and replaced by an identical provision (indefinite detention) in the Transkei Public Security Act.
ESCAPES The two detainees who escaped from John Vorster Square in April, Pascall Moloi and Patrick Mabinda were reported to have arrived in Tanzania in May.
UITENHAGE Following protests and arson in the black townships of Uitenhage, north of Port Elizabeth, on 16/17 June, 278 people were reported to have been arrested in a massive police swoop in KwaNobuhle Township on the afternoon of 17 June.
