In Soweto police with guns and tear gas attacked people at a memorial service for Steve Biko in an Anglican church. One boy was shot dead, and others wounded. On 23 September police again attacked people gathering to board buses to attend the funeral, using tear gas, batons and sjamboks. The attack continued through the night. (RDM 22/26.9.77)
The funeral itself passed off without violence from the police but later a boy was killed at Dimbaza after attacks on the Ciskei department of labour and local Bantu Administration offices and factories. Police used guns and tear gas to disperse the crowd. (MS 27.9.77)
