At the beginning of October unrest exploded at Queenstown when a match was stopped by police using batons and tear gas. Two people were killed. Public buildings and a policeman's home were burnt; over 80 arrests were made in four days of disturbances. At Cradock a policeman's home was destroyed and a Bantu Administration office burnt; five people were injured by police gunshots. Following this and incidents in Whittlesea and Mdantsane, East London, the Ciskei education department closed all its schools in East London, King Williams Town, Queenstown and Port Elizabeth and on 7 October the Ezibeleni township at Queenstown was sealed off by Transkeian police.
