University students have also been involved in demonstrations against separate education and Steve Biko's death.

At the University of the North at Turfloop unrest continued through August and September. The authorities sent all students home on 25 August following a two-day boycott and the expulsion of an SRC member. At a meeting in Soweto invaded by the police students decided to return but to refuse to sign the required declaration. On 13 September a mass meeting called on the rector to resign. Police detained seven SRC members and patrolled the campus. The next day students voted to continue the boycott; police moved in to expel them and baton charged a gathering outside the gates. At the end of September 1000 students were expelled. On 5 October an attempt was made to burn a students' hostel. (W 9/14/15/29.9.77; RDM 6.10.77)

At the University of Fort Hare at Alice 1200 students arrested following a memorial meeting for Steve Biko on 15 September and charged under the Riotous Assemblies Act (W 16.9.77). Also in Alice, there was an arson attempt on the administrative building of a teacher's training college on 11 September. The college had recently been reopened by the Ciskei education department after being closed following a boycott (W 12.9.77).

Police were called to the campus of the (Coloured) University of the Western Cape in late September and were stoned by students. The rector dismissed the SRC. (CT 28.9.77)

In Durban the University of Natal's black medical school SRC announced an indefinite boycott of all lectures and examinations in protest against the decision to phase out black medical training there from 1978. Academic staff were said to support the students' stand. (NW 6/7.10.77) On 21 October it was reported that the decision had been postponed. (RDM 21.10.77)
