According to a press release from the SWAPO Department of Information and Publicity, SWAPO's Regional Treasurer in Swakopmund, Abnel Amwama, was shot by South African Special Branch men on 26 December 1977. Amwama was with a group of SWAPO members at the gate of the single quarters in Swakopmund, on their way to visit friends, when two Special Branch men drew up alongside in a car and told them they were going to give them "a Christmas present". The men, identified as two senior Special Branch officials named Nehale and Usiel, then pulled out a gun and shot Amwama. Amwama was admitted to hospital in Windhoek in a critical condition, and later died. According to the police a "gang" of SWAPO supporters had attacked the two black policemen, one of whom had fired a warning shot.
