A second young Cape Town detainee was the subject of a court application in January when his father asked for an injunction to stop the police assaulting his 17 year old son. Evidence of assault was supplied by a youth held on a criminal charge in custody with the young detainee, who told him of being given electric shocks to his feet and whose badly bruised face and swollen feet he observed. When the detainee's mother collected his clothing from Caledon Square police station, his trouser pockets and handkerchief were bloodstained. Affidavits from the Cape Town district surgeon and a senior magistrate disputed the alleged assaults. No injuries could be seen by either although the district surgeon said that the youth had pains in his chest and ear and 'electric lights in his cell made him feel dizzy'. No outcome was reported of the application.
