• Donald MATTERA, newspaper subeditor, appeared in court on 6 April charged with breaking his ban by attending gatherings on several occasions between September and November 1977. A number of persons called as state witnesses refused to give evidence until they had fuller details of the alleged offences. One witness, Dr. A. Asvat, said he had seen Mattera outside a Moslem hall in Lenasia, but was told his testimony referred to a gathering 2 km away at the Lenasia Administration Building.

Charges were withdrawn against Rev. Theo KOTZE and Rev. Brian BROWN, both charged with breaking their bans by attending church. In March Brown was granted an exit permit and left South Africa for Britain.
