Three former Robben Island prisoners appeared briefly in the East London regional Court on 4 January, on charges of becoming or continuing to be members of the Pan-Africanist Congress. They appeared in two separate trials. Gladwell MBALI, who served 12 years on Robben Island for PAC activities, appeared under the Suppression of Communism Act on charges relating to PAC membership. In the other trial, Joseph MAYEDWA (55) and Siyetha SIMON, both of Mdantsame township, appeared on similar charges. Mayedwa had served 4½ years on Robben Island, and Simon, 3 years. All three men were remanded.
