New bans announced recently include: * Harold NXASANA (39) former trade union leader from Umlazi, Durban, who gave evidence for the state in the trial of ten ANC/SACTU members in Pietermaritzburg following severe torture. Nxasana was released in August 1977 after spending nearly 20 months in solitary detention. The ban is understood to exclude Nxasana from union activities and to include a house arrest order. It will run for five years from 30 January 1978. * Ntxizi MOREMI (27) of Sebokeng, who was a community worker with the Christian Institute, and the sixth CI member to be banned. Moremi had helped to form several welfare organisations, and was the only person in his locality to be detained at the time of the great swoop on 19 October. Deteriorating health appears to have led to his release and subsequent ban. Married with two children, he is subject to restrictions until 1983. * Surinarayan VENKETRATHNAM * Frank ANTHONY * Robert Cedric WILCOX All members of the African Peoples Democratic Union (APDUSA) and Non-European Unity Movement (NEUM) convicted under the Terrorism Act in April 1972 and sentenced to six years imprisonment. Anthony and Wilcox were both teachers from Cape Town; Venketrathnam is from Durban. All were released on 5 April and immediately served with five-year banning orders; in Venketrathnam's case the order was served ten minutes before his actual release.
