The following persons have had their bans renewed on expiry: Ela RAMGOBIN, granddaughter of Mahatma Gandhi and wife of Mewa Ramgobin, also banned since 1971 following attempts to revive the Natal Indian Congress; ban renewed for 3 years 2 months, so that it expires on 30.9.81, the same date as her husband's. Don MATTERA (see FOCUS 16 p.14) journalist and poet first banned in 1973; acquitted of breaking his ban earlier in 1978 (see FOCUS 17 p.7) and re-banned in October until 31.10.83. Under the terms of his ban Mattera is permitted to work as a newspaper sub-editor (DD 2.11.78)
Malusi MPUMLWANA, former BPC worker in the Eastern Cape, first banned in 1973 and detained under the Internal Security Act in 1976 and 1977. Mpumlwana was still in detention when his ban expired in October 1978 and was re-banned on release in December. (RDM 30.12.78)
The banning order on Michael NGUBENI (see FOCUS 19 p.16) has been amended, restricting him to Pabellelo township, Upington, from 28.9.78 to 30.9.83 (GG 6189, 20.10.78)
The banning order on Mamphela RAMPHELE has been extended, confining her to Lenyenge location in the Northern Transvaal, Dr. Ramphele, banished from the Eastern Cape in 1977 (see FOCUS 10 p.10) has been running two clinics in outlying areas which she will no longer be able to visit (RDM 27.10.78)
BAN EXPIRED The ban on Morgan NAIDOO, SAASF swimming official, expired at the end of October and has not been renewed. The world swimming organisation FINA refused to consider South Africa's application for re-admission while Mr. Naidoo was banned (DD 2.11.78)
