Mrs. Fatima MEER and her son-in-law Baptiste (Bobby) MARIE are accused of contravening their banning orders by attending a social function in Durban on 22 December 1977. The case was heard in October, when both pleaded not guilty, and judgement has been reserved to 2 March 1979. (RDM 14.10.78, 2.12.78)
Tembani PHANTSI was convicted in November of breaking his ban on 27 July by leaving the Graaf-Reinet area to which he is confined. He was given a suspended sentence of 4 months (DD 4.11.78). A former school student and BPC member, Phantsi was detained in 1975 and held for a total of 513 days in solitary confinement including a three month sentence for refusing to give evidence against fellow students (see FOCUS 5 p.12, 7 p.11, 10 p.12).
