A total of 22 new banning orders were imposed in the last quarter of 1978, bringing the total number in force at the end of the year to 167.
New bans are as follows: Mosibudi Aaron MANGENA (30) former BPC organiser imprisoned in October 1973 for five years for allegedly recruiting others for military training; banned on release and restricted to Mahwelereng, Mokerong District until 31.10.83. (GG 6189, 20.10.78) Diliza MJI, former SASO president and medical student at Natal University, detained 19 October 1977 under the Internal Security Act for 396 days; banned on release in November 1978 and restricted to Pinetown, Durban until 1983 under conditions which effectively prevent him continuing with his studies (RDM 22.11.78) Terence TRYON, former SASO secretary-general and Natal University student first detained in September 1976 and held from 19 October 1977 under the Internal Security Act; banned on release in November 1978 and restricted to Umzinto, Natal until 1983. Both Tryon and Mji were held in Modder Bee prison Johannesburg. (RDM 22.11.78) Lawrence Jonas NTLOKOA (21) former student from Krugersdorp, held under the Internal Security Act in Modder Bee prison and banned on release in November 1978 for five years. (Voice 25.11.78) Laura Jean LEVETAN, executive member of National Union of South African Students (NUSAS) and of Cape Town University SRC, banned on 24 November for five years, shortly before the opening of the NUSAS annual conference, forbidden to enter all educational institutions and black residential areas. A few days later Ms. Levetan appeared in court on charges under the Publications Act relating to films. (RDM 25/27/30.11.78) Ishmael MKHABELA, chairman of AZAPO and Soweto Action Committee detained in May 1978 (see FOCUS 17 p.6); banned on release at the end of November until 1983 and restricted to Johannesburg. (RDM 2.12.78) Isaac MOROE (23) Soweto journalist detained under the Internal Security Act in July 1978 in Modder Bee; banned for five years on release and restricted to Bethlehem, OFS, where he was allocated a room in Theronville township. Moroe's home is in Bloemfontein. (Voice 9.12.78) Nikiwe Deborah MATSOBA (MABALE) first detained in 1976 and again in February 1977 (see FOCUS 8 p.12, 9 p.10, 19 p.6); held under the Internal Security Act in Johannesburg Fort; banned on release in December 1978 and restricted to Krugersdorp until 1983 (RDM 4.12.78) 'Ramsay' Sedupe RAMOKGOPA, member of the Soweto Committee of Ten detained 19 October 1977 and held under the Internal Security Act; banned on release in December 1978 for five years and restricted to Johannesburg (RDM 4.12.78). Thandisizwe MAZIBUKO, Committee of Ten member detained 19 October 1977 and held under the Internal Security Act; banned on release for five years and restricted to Johannesburg. Former BPC secretary-general, Mazibuko was first detained in July 1976 (see FOCUS 6 p.8) Vuyisile Horatius MDLELENI, poet of Soweto, director of MEDUPE, held under the Internal Security Act from October 1977; banned on release in December 1978 and restricted to Johannesburg until 1983 (RDM 30.12.78). D. Aubrey MOKOENA, doctor, member of the Black Parents Association and former SASO and BPC associate (see FOCUS 2 p.3) detained 19 October 1977 and held under the Internal Security Act; banned for five years on release and restricted to Johannesburg. Isaac 'Drake' TSHENKENG, former vice president of BPC and Soweto, detained under the Internal Security Act 19 October 1977; banned on release in December 1978 and restricted to Johannesburg until 1983. (RDM 30.12.78) Kenneth RACHIDI, former BPC chairman first detained in 1976 and held under the Internal Security Act from 19 October 1977 till October 1978; banned in December for five years and restricted to Johannesburg (RDM 20.12.78) Juby MAYET, journalist on the Voice and widowed mother of six (see FOCUS 14 p.10) held from May to October under the Internal Security Act; banned in December for five years, restricted to Johannesburg and prevented from working in journalism. (Voice 23.12.78) Ashlaiha (Asha) RAMBALLY, editor of Black Review, detained in 1977 and transferred to ISA detention in April 1978; banned on release from Grahamstown prison and restricted to Colenso, Natal, until 1983 (RDM 30.12.78; see also FOCUS 9 p.12).
