Two men, described as "dangerous armed terrorists", escaped from Jeppe police cells in Johannesburg on 18 January. A young black constable went with them. A senior police officer said the two men were "extremely dangerous" and were awaiting trial on charges under the Terrorism Act. No names were given, but the officer said that the two men were arrested with a number of other suspected guerillas on the Witwatersrand "some time ago".

A massive manhunt had been launched, but the officer said it appeared the guerillas had made their way to Botswana. (RDM 24.1.79)
