An appeal by SACHARIUS ALFEUS against his conviction and eight year prison sentence under the Terrorism Act was upheld in the Bloemfontein Appeal Court on 22 March. The accused, a shopkeeper in the Efid district of Ovamboland, was alleged to have supplied various articles to SWAPO guerillas in September 1977. He was convicted by the Windhoek Supreme Court in May 1978.

On 30 March in the Cape Town Supreme Court, NICHOLAS 'FINK' HAYSON, former President of NUSAS, lost his appeal against conviction and 12 month prison sentence for refusing to give evidence against SWAPO member Peter Manning. In a written judgement however, Mr. Justice De van Winsen, with Mr. Justice Grosskopf concurring, reduced Haysom's sentence to three months, suspended for three years.
