During 1978 a total of 54 persons were held in preventive detention under the Internal Security Act. Of these, 39 were African, eight Indian, four White and three Coloured. The figures were given to Parliament by the Minister of Police on 5th April.
In response to another question, the Minister said 114 cases had been referred to the review committee set up to advise on Internal Security Act detentions; of these, 82 cases had been reviewed once, 27 twice, four three times and one four times. During 1978 nine ISA detainees had been released on the recommendation of the review committee.
