During 1978 a total of 204 persons were killed by police 'during the course of their duties', and 514 were injured. Of these, 140 of those killed and 368 of those injured were said by the authorities to have been fired on 'while attempting to escape'.
The number of those killed shows a four-fold increase over the past decade:
