A Thembisa poet, Jackie SEROKE (19), was sentenced in the Kempton Park Magistrate's Court to nine months' imprisonment, after being convicted of being in possession of a banned document, namely the Freedom Charter. (ST 23.9.79) The report on this matter is not clear. It is not certain that mere possession of the Freedom Charter constitutes an offence. (WIP Nov 1979)

Fifty-five bus drivers of the Ciskei Transport Corporation were found guilty in the East London Regional court in July 1979 on a charge under the Riotous Assemblies Act. 16 others were acquitted. They had originally been charged under the Sabotage Act.

Their conviction was because of their strike at the bus company in January 1979. Those convicted were each sentenced to nine months' imprisonment, conditionally suspended for four years. (DD July 1979)
