Despite constant harrassment and arrests, SWAPO supporters and members continue to work politically inside Namibia. At a meeting organised on 30 March in Katutura, the black township near Windhoek, 2,000 supporters shouted 'One Namibia, One Nation'. It was the first public meeting for some time, and members of the Windhoek Executive of SWAPO spoke mainly about SWAPO's position with regard to elections for Namibia.
Camouflaged policemen armed with rifles were on duty and a few plain-clothes policemen were in parked cars nearby. The meeting was peaceful.
In the "operational area" in northern Namibia, SWAPO members also help to politicize the population. Propaganda leaflets are apparently placed under stones, fallen trees or any other suitable hiding place. The leaflet explains why young people have joined the guerillas and tells the reader how to give assistance. It takes up political issues, condemning the exploitation of the natural wealth and of the working people of Namibia, and rejecting the National Assembly.
