On the 20th anniversary of the Sharpeville massacre, the United Nations appealed for continuing support for the victims of apartheid, particularly for the United Nations Trust Fund which provides "legal assistance, education and relief for those persecuted under repressive and discriminatory legislation in South Africa".

The UN Trust Fund, established in 1965, had by the end of 1979 received nearly $9 million from governments and other donors. The Trustees emphasise the need for "greater contributions to voluntary agencies doing humanitarian work in Southern Africa".
