In a letter to the UN Secretary-General, Angola's representative to the United Nations ElÃsio de Figueiredo stated that South Africa had concentrated more than 95,000 troops and mercenaries in northern Namibia in preparation for large-scale invasions.
Press reports earlier this year gave the figure of 100,000 for the total number of South African "troops and paramilitary police" in Namibia. It is more usual for estimates of the South African military presence in the illegally occupied territory to exclude the police.
