An additional 20,000 Namibian refugees have arrived in Angola in recent months, many prompted by the introduction of military conscription for black males. 30,000 Namibians have been settled by the Angolan authorities and SWAPO in the province of Kwanza Sul, at the SWAPO-administered Namibia Health and Education Centre.
The total number of Namibian refugees in exile is now estimated to have reached over 73,000 persons, the majority being in Angola. The continually increasing refugee population is placing very considerable strain on Angola's food and other resources.
