Relatives of Johannes Kakuva, who was found by the Windhoek Supreme Court to have died in detention, and three men who were detained with Kakuva, are suing the security police for damages. Summons were being served on three security police officers who were stationed in Opuwo in Kaokoland at the time of Kakuva's death.

Kakuva's widow is suing for R65,000 for loss of maintenance for herself and her children, and his brother is claiming R45,000. Napeheri Nderura is suing the first and second defendants, Captain King and Lt. Harmse, for R10,000, Gustav Hao for R10,000 and Mr. Mbaumba for R7,000 for damages 'resulting from the unlawful detention in 1980'. The three former detainees are also suing all three security police officers for further damages of between R3,000 and R4,000 for 'pain, suffering and crimen injuria'.
