Fifteen Angolan soldiers, captured by South African forces and held in Namibia, were released on 22 May and returned to Angola, in exchange for a soldier of the SWA Territory Force captured in Angola. According to South African reports, the exchange also involved a Cuban soldier and 'about 14 other Angolan troops'. The exchange was arranged by the International Red Cross.

The exchange followed a visit in early May to the detention camp at Hardap Dam in southern Namibia by a delegation of the joint monitoring commission which is supervising the withdrawal of South African troops from Angola. Angolan prisoners-of-war have been held there together with the Kassinga detainees.
