In late September the Court of Appeal in Bloemfontein ruled on two cases referred to it by the Windhoek Supreme Court.
The court upheld the death sentence passed in December 1983 on Jonas PAULUS, a member of the Police special unit Koevoet who was convicted on various charges of murder, rape and robbery. Paulus is awaiting execution in Windhoek Central Prison.
The Appeal Court also upheld the conviction and sentence of Andries van Rooyen. Van Rooyen was sentenced to six years imprisonment for the culpable homicide of Kasire Thomas in March 1982. Thomas was chained and beaten repeatedly by van Rooyen for more than two days while working as a parole prisoner on his farm. After his conviction in March 1983 van Rooyen was released on bail pending appeal. In early October he began his sentence in Windhoek Central Prison.
