On 17 October General Meiring, the Commanding Officer of SWATF, called a press conference to announce the capture of an alleged SWAPO guerilla named only as AKUSHINDA. It was said that he had been taken on 12 October following a clash in which six of his fellow combatants were reportedly killed. A picture of Akushinda in the press indicated he had been wounded. At the press conference Meiring described Akushinda as SWAPO's military commander in Kavango and claimed to have destroyed their headquarters in the region. He accused Akushinda of involvement in 47 attacks over the last year. In recent years there have been very few political trials of captured guerillas. Evidence indicates that they are kept in detention and tortured for whatever information they have.
