• David GASA and Sipho GUMEDE were released from detention in Durban on 2 November. They were detained at a roadblock along with Alfred MKHIZE on 16 June and held under Section 29 of the ISA. The three appeared in the Durban Magistrate's Court on 26 October but they were not asked to plead. On 2 November Gasa and Gumede were released from Durban Central Prison and told that the charges had been withdrawn. Mkhize was reported to be in hospital under armed guard in October.
  • Nicodemus PHAKE was released from detention on 15 October. Phake, an official of AZAPO, served five years on Robben Island, from 1978 to 1983, for sabotage.
  • Amos MASONDO, of the General and Allied Workers Union, was released in late October. Rita NDZANGA and Solomon PHOLOTO, from the same union, remained in detention.
  • Three community leaders from Cradock were released on 10 October after six months in detention under Section 28 of the Internal Security Act. Matthew GONIWE, Mbulelo GONIWE and Fort CALATA were held during rent and school protests. Madoda JACOBS, a student leader who was detained with them, was held for four months and then acquitted on a charge of public violence. The men could not be quoted on their release as they were then listed persons.
