POLITICAL TRIALS COMPLETED TRIALS MABENA AND THWALA Sipho Wilfred MABENA (24) and Diliza Lucky THWALA (24) were sentenced to an effective twelve years' imprisonment in the Benoni Regional Court on 26 June. Thwala, from Senaoane in Soweto, and Mabena from Mamelodi told the court they remained committed to the aims and objectives of the ANC.

BALEKA AND OTHERS Twenty two people, including leading officials of the United Democratic Front and its affiliate, the Vaal Civic Association, as well as members of the Azanian People's Organisation (AZAPO), appeared in the Pretoria Magistrates' Court on 11 June charged with high treason, 'terrorism', subversion and murder. Most of the accused had been in detention for many months.
