Heikki SHILILIFA, a former political prisoner, was released on detention on 8 June with Immanuel SHIVOLO, a CDM employee from Okando. Both had been held since 20 January.

Shililifa was severely assaulted by Koevoet police at Omulukila Primary School, where he teaches. He was variously detained at the Outapi Base at Ombalantu, then Racana, the SADF base at Oshakati, Ondangwa police station, and finally at Osire detention centre.

Shililifa was able to describe some of the conditions of detainees: many 'were given electric shocks and beaten up, while most... do not even know why they are being held'.

He voiced concern over the fate of Johannes KAMEYA who was taken with him to Osire but was then removed. He did not know his present whereabouts. Shililifa spent five years on Robben Island between 1978-83 after being convicted of helping people to leave the country for military training with SWAPO.
